It was a play on words by Linux (sic) Torvalds. He says it was named after himself, though here in Scotland (UK) the translation isn't quite 'scoundrel', more like 'shallow idiot'.

Being able to describe a friend as a 'lucky git' with a tinge of envy, and still be a friend, is at the heart of it in this case.
