Thanks for the PR. From a quick skim I see at least a few cases where I think this is perhaps doing the wrong thing. I had actually started on something similar-but-different earlier this morning, which I hope will ultimately be _much_ simpler in terms of the shim code itself (at expense of needing JDK25 during the release process..but not whilst running, still just targeting a Java 17 base as now).
