I tried pressing Ctrl+. in mousepad (ver 0.5.8), another text editor for xfce, 
and the same problem occurs: pressing Ctrl+. causes an underlined e to replace 
the character at the cursor, and pressing it again restores the original 
character.
So clearly this is not a Geany problem. Unfortunately I don't know how to 
identify where the problem is so I'm closing this issue.
