The current functionality is also inconsistent. If you have nothing selected and hit "ctrl+f" it doesn't clear the box. It is not unreasonable for someone to be clicking words for "highlight all occurrences of this selection" and then using that to help them decide a relationship to search for. In that case pre-filling the text box is an annoyance.
