Separate PRs for these things sounds like a good idea to me. It will help
isolate the changes and make it easier for review too. So, just to make sure
I'm understanding correctly, for this PR:
* There is no ability to unregister a function and function names have to
be unique (we should include this in the documentation for the register
function, we can take that part back out later)
* We can only register a function for a single set of input types
