@lidavidm do you have a preference between defaulting to ANY shape or ARRAY shape? Let's assume worst case that we don't ever get rid of scalar shape and we fix the bugs that prevent scalar shape from being used in project. ANY will be more flexible but opens up the risk users do not provide a full implementation for all cases.
