   Thanks @paleolimbot & @assignUser. I wouldn't have thought to look under 
"acero" for the docs but that's exactly what I needed. 
   
   My guess is then that only the functions under the "Function mappings" 
header would be available inside `summarize`, `mutate`, etc, and `length`, 
`unique`, and `count_distinct` are not among them. 
   
   I didn't know about `count` as a first class dplyr verb. TIL! Nor did I know 
about the convenience function `n_distinct`. 
   
   I think this is what I need -- although it looks like what lead me astray 
was that the "Working with Arrow Datasets and dplyr" vignette doesn't include 
`count` in its list of supported dplyr verbs or contain a link to the 
https://arrow.apache.org/docs/r/reference/acero.html page. 
   
   I'd be happy to submit a PR with some edits to the vignette if that would be 
helpful.
