Thank you @alamb for the thorough review. We will go through your comments and improve the PR accordingly. I will discuss both your second example and the one extra sort with @mustafasrepo tomorrow in detail. My gut feeling is that the second example you mention ought to be one of the cases this PR should handle -- we may be able to handle it by terminating the traversal "properly".
