I have done this before for object_store and while it takes some time I think it is worth it in this case. As for the technical plans, the only thing I feel (very) strongly is that there is a migration path that doesn't involve a "all downstream crates need to rewrite the world" -- given the above discussions, it sounds like there are already some good thoughts on this matter so I trust it will be in good hands.
