This sounds like a good middle ground. I appreciate the care with wanting to get permission first, and think it might be good to add the extra checks (like the checksum, along with the alternate paths that WRE recommends), but if this isn't causing us issues, I'm not sure it's worth the time to pull it out / reengineer it. If we are thinking about removing it, it would be good to have a better understanding of the original motivation + if that's still relevant. @nealrichardson might have some more of the history. Another thing we should remember is that if CRAN doesn't allow downloading binaries on the linuxes that they check, we will still want to maintain an easy path to source building for those linuxes (including making it super painless to get a prereq like cmake in place), though if we do get permission for binary downloading that calculus might change slightly. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
