I ran perf against a debug build locally (Linux) and on an m6i VM and nothing significantly different seemed to appear. However, it naively seemed like the destructor of Status being the largest overhead was unexpected. Thought it may have been related to https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ARROW-2400, and so reverted that w/ no significant change in the perf report.
