I agree that the Rust arrow implementation is likely to need several more months of non trivial changes to get to a point where we want to be more constrained with backwards compatibility. Given the subtlety of this change, if this bug also exists in the 2.0.0 release of arrow I don't think we should merge it in 3.0.0 at the last minute.
