Thanks @paleolimbot. I just checked [the diff between 1.34.0 and 1.35.0](https://github.com/rstudio/reticulate/compare/v1.34.0...v1.35.0) and I think you're right on both counts. In https://github.com/rstudio/reticulate/commit/9b2c8d484edb5e9225a2bf0f65e6bebfeb7dc4ad the name changed from "NULL" to "r_extptr" and code was added to validate against the name (by calling `PyCapsule_IsValid`). -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
