Thanks @felipecrv, your work on this has been really productive. The sharding approach sounds like a great future improvement. Is it worth sketching that out in a new issue? I'll let you decide. Since there is still a detectable cost, as measured by our benchmarks but probably also in real-world applications, I think following your PR up with a compile- or run-time flag would be a good improvement.
