Thanks! It does seem a little better, but isn't drastic in this case. It would help if we tuned the pre-buffer settings for the characteristics of S3 as seen from the non-EC2 machine but that's not really worth doing. (Unless people reading from S3 over the broader Internet is a thing? It'd also be interesting to see how cross-region reads behave in EC2 itself.
