@alamb @scovich Would either of you have time to review this PR? Half of the PR is test code, so the actual production code diff is about ~900 lines. I also have ideas on improving this further and plan to refine it. This was an interesting one to tackle and I found it challenging to do so in a clean manner. Finally this is a pretty important PR, as it's the last major PR the `Reader` should need before being functionally ready for public release.
