   The general idea is that dealing with feature flags through multiple levels 
of a dependency stack in a complex build is a pain (or perhaps I am just not 
very good at them yet). A runtime option would let a dependency 2 or 3 levels 
removed from the Parquet crate decide that they wanted to support Variant or 
Geometry/Geography on a particular read or write operation without forcing the 
rest of the stack to care or take on an additional dependency.
   
   That said, we probably don't need this in SedonaDB (we already do our own 
type-overriding based on the Parquet schema).
