Thanks for opening! The general idea is that dealing with feature flags through multiple levels of a dependency stack in a complex build is a pain (or perhaps I am just not very good at them yet). A runtime option would let a dependency 2 or 3 levels removed from the Parquet crate decide that they wanted to support Variant or Geometry/Geography on a particular read or write operation without forcing the rest of the stack to care or take on an additional dependency.
