Thanks @rustyconover for picking this up and carrying @cmettler's work forward — rebasing across ~76 commits of drift and responding to the Copilot round was the part that unblocked it. I've had a few further changes outstanding here for a couple of weeks (replacing `LastBatchCustomMetadata` with a `RecordBatchWithMetadata` return type, and fixing `ArrowFileWriter` silently skipping the ARROW1 magic on the new overload), so rather than let it sit any longer I've moved the branch into the base repository as #432, where any committer can push to it. Your commit and Christoph's are carried over unchanged with their original authorship, and both of you are credited as co-authors on the PR so the attribution survives the squash merge.
