went through the columnar spec. it does not name the empty union case, you were right about that. two things in it settle it anyway. nullness: unions carry no validity bitmap, the nullness of each slot is determined exclusively by the child arrays. new_null is asking for null slots, and with no children there is nothing to carry the null. slots: the types buffer holds a type id per slot and each type in the union has a corresponding type id, and for dense the offsets buffer is a relative offset into the respective child array. neither means anything with no children. so len 0 stays the only representable length, and the pr panics for the rest rather than building something validate_full would reject. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
