@mbutrovich I had a local fix for this pending and noticed your recent issue, so I’ve opened [draft PR #11771](https://github.com/apache/arrow-rs/pull/11771) to push discussion further. It’s still very much a work in progress. The approach is to apply the requested sort options to Union child values and encode logical nulls independently of their type IDs. This addresses both the descending-order and null-placement mismatches described here. One open question is decoding: nulls under different type IDs share the same encoding, so their original tags are no longer preserved. I’d appreciate feedback on that policy...
