Exactly fall into the same issue here. I think the cpp doc mentioned by @jrecuerda above is a little confusing because the "Invoking functions" section teaches as the way to use CallFunction and "Grouped Aggregations" section lists out the names and input args. Then a natural way for me to think is to do group by is arrow::compute::CallFunction -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
