Review comment:
       Unfortunately [the atomic operations don't exist in libstdc++ 4.9 and 
down](https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=57250), as still used in CI 
via RTools 35. So I guess in that case, my algorithm has to resort to a mutex 
after all. f67f75c
