Review comment:
       I'm not sure this can be correct.  `new_fields` is not defined any 
longer.  Do you know if any of the tests exercise this path?  I don't really 
understand the purpose of the `implicit_schema` function.

Review comment:
       Why aren't we doing `setdiff(names(.data), .data$join$by)`?  It's 
possible I just don't understand but it seems like both sides would have the 
`by` columns.
