These are great questions (and another great PR) I'll do my best to review this promptly. I'm oncall this week, so I may not be able to answer everything at once. In the mean time, you may be interested in learning that on the [Beam Dev List](https://lists.apache.org/thread/qnp59c68mcynfjyd9kjfghjwvcrw9hw2) there's a discussion of a properly documented standard for IOs in Beam, in progress in [a Google Doc](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BCTpSZDUjK90hYZjcn8aAnPd9vuRfj8YU1j3mpSgRwI/edit#heading=h.v2glvgcevjz).
