Status update: @alxmrs invited me to wrap this PR up for him, which I am delighted to do as this is will be quite useful for us over in [Pangeo Forge](https://pangeo-forge.readthedocs.io). So far I have resolved the pre-commit failures and started to familiarize myself with the implementation. AFAICT, the major remaining work is getting codecov to pass through addition of further tests. I will continue on that and ping the reviewers here when I'm ready for re-review. Thanks all in advance for your patience with me as a first-time Beam contributor.
