Review Comment:
   You should be able to use `m.group(1)` rather than stripping out the {}s 
after the fact, right?
   
   (Too bad we're still on Java 8 or we could use `Matcher.results()`.)

Review Comment:
   Nit: Rather than recursing on a list of fieldLevels and an index, it might 
be simpler to do something like
   
   ```
   def getValue(row, path):
     dot = path.indexOf('.')
     if dot == -1:
       return row.getValue(path)
     else:
       getValue(row.getValue(path[:dot]), path[:dot+1])
   ```
