Thanks for the detailed analysis — this is very helpful. The AutoValueSchema field-ordering mismatch during state restoration sounds plausible, especially since this only reproduces on Dataflow job *updates* (and not drain), where schema-based decoding is exercised. Given the TODO on `KafkaSourceDescriptor.create()`, it seems worth confirming whether this workaround is still required or if removing it (as discussed in #36357) resolves the issue in newer Beam versions.
