The `net.researchgate.release` plugin was added in #5187 (2018), but none of its tasks (`./gradlew release`, `createReleaseTag`, `updateVersion`, etc.) are used anywhere in the repository or release automation (which is handled by `.github/workflows/cut_release_branch.yml`, `.github/workflows/build_release_candidate.yml`, and `.github/workflows/finalize_release.yml`).
