   I'm on an Apple Silicon Mac, so I looked into this.

   `dev-support/docker/Dockerfile` is now based on `ubuntu:24.04`, which is
multi-arch, so Docker on an M-series Mac builds a native arm64 image. The Go
step still downloads `go${DOWNLOAD_GO_VERSION}.linux-amd64.tar.gz`, though, so
the image ends up with an x86-64 Go toolchain. That would explain the
`/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2` error mentioned above.

   Two ways to fix it:
   - declare `ARG TARGETARCH` (BuildKit sets it) and download
`go${DOWNLOAD_GO_VERSION}.linux-${TARGETARCH}.tar.gz`. Go publishes
`linux-arm64` tarballs with the same naming, so the image stays native on Apple
Silicon;
   - or pass `--platform linux/amd64` in `start-build-env.sh`. That's a smaller
change, but everything then runs under emulation and Gradle builds get much
slower.

   I'd lean towards the first. I'd like to work on this and test
`./start-build-env.sh` end to end on my Mac. Does that direction sound right?

   @damccorm could you please assign this issue to me ?
   I am also attaching implementation approach mermaid diagram below
