Review comment:
       It looks like the last line `return False` cannot be reached, because we 
loop until first non-escape or the start of buffer and always return. That's 
the problem...
   Without the line code only passes Pylint validation because 
`inconsistent-return-statements` is disabled, but can confuse readers.
