       I will note that it's possible to expect and test panics: 
   ```
   defer func(t *testing.T) {
     if r := recover(); r != nil {
       // ...  validate r matches the value passed to panic ...
      return
     } 
     t.Fatal("expected a panic")
   }(t)
   ```
   As you can imagine, it's best for those cases to be isolated.
