This is a big and fundamental change so some time is required to go thru it carefully. I am, however, in favor of a merge-then-review approach so that any future work starts leveraging this as soon as possible. What do others think? From a more cursory review - this is the right approach to solve the problem of serializing a large amount of per-partition data.
