Ok I am going to close this draft. The bulk of the work is done and 2 PRs remain: 1. cleans up the remaining bits that slipped through the cracks when I split things out into lots of pieces https://github.com/apache/datafusion-python/pull/1435 2. Updates all other examples in the repo to match the doc testable format https://github.com/apache/datafusion-python/pull/1437 This means we have full coverage over functions.py. If we think this is valuable could file an issue to extend this to other areas of the code base.
