   Thanks for catching this. I implemented a scope-aware guard in the stacked 
follow-up PR https://github.com/wirybeaver/datafusion/pull/4. It now allows 
nested aliases to shadow the MERGE target alias while continuing to reject 
genuine direct and deeply nested target correlation. I also added consolidated 
regressions covering projection scopes, multi-level nesting, lateral joins, and 
LIMIT/OFFSET scope behavior. The clean stacked PR is in my fork because the 
parent `feature/mergeinto` branch exists only there; it can be retargeted to 
`apache/datafusion:main` after #22988 lands.
