Another concept is a "common type" that will probably be especially helpful for variant...anything I do here will be a port of vctrs ( https://vctrs.r-lib.org/articles/s3-vector.html#casting-and-coercion ) which has a nice extensible system for this. The CastExtension or the registry that holds it could deal with both of those things (e.g., define a common type transformer that takes a shredded and an unshredded variant and defines its common type as the unshredded version, then define a CastExtension that handles variant -> variant. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
