@adriangb Sorry I missed this! Yeah, that's a good point about filter pushdown. I agree that filter pushdown reduces how useful this technique is. I suppose if we expect there to be significant classes of queries for which filter pushdown will never be applicable, this could still be useful, but offhand I don't think that's true.
