   IMO this is quite important and we should be careful to preserve this kind 
of optimizations in any new design. Admittedly, we don't do a great job in 
removing/avoiding runtime checks in various other use cases within today's 
architecture, but let's not lose that capability completely -- I remember some 
cases where this kind of specializations yielded very significant performance 
improvements.
