and if you were, apparently you need to unset some environment variables that cygwin sets; sorry this is a vague memory and I don't recall more. I myself avoid the cygwin port completely -- the main reason in my case being the complexity of installing which makes it very difficult to hand hold a newbie (over the phone) through installing and setting it up.
