Two things. 1. Though you should not push to a repo with working files, it's fine to pull into one or from one. So you can do what want by always updating the local repo using pulls from the remotes, rather than doing pushes to the remotes.
2. "And I might add, this is the GitHub support mailing list :) " The Description on the mailing list home page reads: "The official GitHub discussion group. Talk about features, ideas, problems, git, whatever!" It does not make sense to invite general git queries and then be annoyed when people make them.
