Aha. Just found a (much) newer installer, ran it, and all is well.

I've been through this once before, and was only able to restore it
by deleting the entire repository from Github, and then push from my
local machine. Obviously if I do that here, I will lose all the fork
metadata (at least I think that's what will happen).
Does anyone have any good ideas how to go about fixing this? I'm
using git 1.6.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.8
