Thanks for the advice. I have determined that it is something to do with my connection to github. I cannot ping github.com (4 failures). However, I was able to clone a public repository from elsewhere. I also determined that it is not the firewall. I turned off my firewall to quickly test connecting to github (I turned it back on after the test failed). I have been using the clone commands as listed on github. I will have to test proxy and ssh next.
