One thing that I've seen done on googlegroup lists is to change
the default moderation setting for new members.
If you change it to "moderate user's first post" then it'll stop
spam from ever hitting the list. The downside is you have to go
through and find legitimate new member posts amongst the spam
every so often. Google would indeed be apt to help automate it
further.
