Just a side note, in git history is treated very much like the actual code is. Every commit "confirms" all of the code and history up to that point and whenever you clone a repository you get all of the history (there are also ways to just grab the files but that isn't really cloning the repo and is quite rare). So basically what I'm trying to point out is that it is very difficult to "lose" history in git because it goes everywhere the code does.
