Dear Colleagues, Greetings from UgaBYTES.
Telecenter.org on Thursday 17 November 2005 hatched its long awaited strategic plan to support telecenters and Telecenter networks across the developing countries. As a social investment programme and online community, telecentre.org aims to meet some of the more pressing needs of Telecenters and telecenter networks. It will help strengthen networks within the telecentre movement through workshops, peer-learning and staff exchanges, while at the same time promoting knowledge sharing throughout the world by means of online services and curriculum development. Consulting support, business planning resources and back-office support will also be provided to help build the capacity of telecentre networks. IDRC and Microsoft have jointly contributed initial financing of $17 million Canadian (CAD) to underwrite telecentre.orgs operations and its investments in telecentre initiatives, with SDC providing an additional 5 million Swiss francs (CHF). In the immediate future, telecentre.org will make social investments to support the work of regional telecentre networks in Chile, India, Mozambique, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda and the Americas. It is also working with partners to deliver global services aimed at increasing the capacity of telecentre networks. For more information about the hatchery of telecenter.org at WSIS, visit: http://www.irishdev.com/NewsArticle.aspx?id=1394 The information can also be accessed from the newly launched Telecenter.org website and the Telecenter.org WSIS events website below: http://www.telecentre.org http://wsis.telecentre.org It is finally happening and confidences are that it will not go far without grassroots telecenters' goodwill to collaboratively coordinate across the developing world.
