infoDev is pleased to announce a Call for Proposals from planning grants
for the creation of Country Gateways in the Sub-Saharan Africa Region.
The deadline for submission of all Planning Grant proposals from
Sub-Saharan Africa is Friday, January 18, 2002. Please visit the website
<http://www.infodev.org/gateway/> for more information.

The Development Gateway is an Internet portal for information on
sustainable development and poverty reduction -- offering a common space
for dialogue and exchange of experience, knowledge, ideas, tools, and
other resources. Country Gateways are independently owned and operated
partners of the Development Gateway, which provide country-level
information and resources, and promote local content. They are governed
by multi-stakeholder groups within each country, with a content strategy
and IT platform connected to the Gateway portal through common standards
and shared approaches to facilitate knowledge sharing. National,
regional, and local governments, along with the private sector, civil
society, and international organizations are key partners in the
development of Country Gateways. In addition to a portal, Country
Gateway programs may also include e-government, e-business, and
e-learning components, and other Internet-based e-development services.
Country Gateways are expected to improve accountability, inclusiveness,
and efficiency of the development process; contribute to a better
quality of life and to poverty reduction; help reduce corruption through
increased transparency; contribute to better connectivity and use of IT;
and join together the efforts of the international donor community,
private sector, civil society, and governments to address development
issues using local momentum.
