Dear GKD Forum: Regarding the application of emerging technologies by Local Governments (LGs), I am looking for concrete case studies on how LGs are using ICTs to promote sustainable tourism. Obviously these technologies must be coordinated at different government levels, be locally appropriate to the infrastructure, and be promoted by the private sector in coordination with LGs. Uses of cyber kiosks, innovative GSM platform mobile telephony applications and GIS technologies, particularly for eco-tourism, are the ones most commonly suggested. What can LGs do to support or encourage these applications?
Aside from a few specific destination successes, largely championed by individual entrepreneurs, I am unaware of analytical case studies on how LGs utilize ICTs more effectively to promote sustainable tourism, which remains one of the most viable economic growth mechanisms for LGs in emerging markets. Thank you again for the engaging and informative discussions to date.
