Try setting the 'Expand' property of the handlebox to FALSE (on the 'Place'
properties page). I think that solves the problem of it leaving a large space.
The handlebar doesn't shrink too much for me, though someone else has had a
similar problem.
Can you send me the XML file (gzipped) and I'll try to figure out what's happening.
Also what GTK+ and Glade versions are you using?
