Is this a "known" cause for panic, or a new one? If the latter. I've saved
offending files for future proceedings.

On my earlier "Illegal instruction" problem: had it happen again, this
time due to a bufuddled makefile causing an incorrectly compiled object
to be linked in (I think). Hence, my working assumption is that my
earlier difficulty was also an instance of this...
