After a successful bootstrap, I tried something even braver:
Compiling GHC 4.00 again with the bootstrapped version, but this
time with SRC_HC_OPTS += -O added to mk/build.mk. This failed
rather quickly:

There seems to be some interface syntax confusion ('!' vs. '.')
in 4.00.
