GHC-4.00 "unimplemented check"

Hi,


We use a small Avl module in our compiler project. GHC 4.00
crashes with the error message "unimplemented check" when
compiling with 

  ghc -c -O -H45M Avl.hs

- but

  ghc -c -H45M Avl.hs        and
  ghc -c -O2 -H45M Avl.hs

will compile without error messages.

Why?
